Traditional coil blanking often involves die stamping. With the advancement of technology, laser cutting technology has become increasingly mature. Understanding the differences and advantages of both technologies allows us to make better choices based on specific circumstances.
1. Processing Capacity
The precision of press blanking depends on the precision of the die. Laser cutting is based on a program execution method. For blanking sheets with complex shapes, laser blanking may be more effective than press blanking.
2. Blanking Speed
Each time a press machine completes a pressing, it completes one blanking. In contrast, laser cutting requires traversing a complete cutting path to complete one blanking cycle; its processing time depends on the complexity and length of the path.
3. Production Changeover Efficiency

Press blanking requires different dies to perform different sheet blanking, but changing the die takes some time. Laser cutting, on the other hand, determines the processing content based on CAD drawings; only the drawings need to be changed to adjust the processing, and less time is required. This is far more flexible than die-changing.
4. Material Utilization
(This is the cutting effect of laser blanking. You can see the arrangement is very tight.)
When blanking sheets for complex shapes, a certain amount of edge space needs to be reserved, which leads to material waste. Laser cutting layout can be handled by layout software, enabling tighter layout and maximizing material utilization.
5. Investment Costs
Die making and press deployment are among the major cost investments in press blanking lines. If it needs multiple different blanks, then multiple dies need to be made, increasing costs accordingly. And the die-making cycle is relatively long. In contrast, the deployment of laser cutting machines in laser blanking lines is relatively easier and less expensive.
In general, if large-volume, long-term stable production is required, press blanking is better. If short-term, small-batch production of frequently modified products is needed, laser blanking is better.
