An upender is a standalone piece of equipment in stamping workshops dedicated to flipping full sheet‑metal stacks by 90° or 180°. Manual handling is infeasible since a stack can weigh several hundred kilograms up to several tons.

Before upenders were widely adopted, workers flipped sheets one‑by‑one when stack orientation required adjustment. Flipping hundreds of sheets took hours with heavy labor intensity. Some factories used overhead cranes for in‑air stack flipping, which posed severe safety risks of sheet scattering caused by insecure fastening. The C‑type frame features a side opening for lateral stack loading and rotates 180° around the horizontal axis. The O‑type is a closed annular frame; stacks are fed from one end, flipped entirely and discharged from the opposite end. After flipping completes, forklifts remove the re‑oriented stack for subsequent processes.

Upenders deliver prominent advantages. First is high efficiency. Manual piece‑by‑piece flipping takes hours, whereas full‑stack flipping by an upender finishes within minutes. Hydraulic drive provides large torque for heavy‑duty stacks, while motor drive ensures smooth and adjustable speed for medium‑and‑light‑weight stacks. Both configurations far outperform manual operations.

Second is enhanced safety. Manual flipping and crane‑assisted flipping carry injury and collapse hazards. Stacks are securely clamped inside the upender frame during rotation to prevent scattering. Operators only operate controllers without physical contact with heavy loads and stay away from hazardous zones.

Third is precise flipping angle. Unlike manual or crane flipping with imprecise angular control, upenders achieve accurate 90° or 180° rotation and maintain tidy stacks without secondary sorting.

Keeping stacks intact constitutes the core value of upenders. Equipped with clamping devices, upenders firmly secure stacks after loading to avoid sheet shifting and misalignment during rotation. Clamping force shall be properly calibrated: insufficient force leads to loose stacks, while excessive force may deform sheet edges.

As an independent process unit, the upender handles full stacks rather than single sheets. It is neither installed inside presses nor deployed on tandem press lines. Typical applications occur pre‑stamping for correcting incoming sheet orientation or post‑stamping to obtain specific surface orientation for warehousing and shipment.
