  3. Cut-to-Length Lines Enable Efficient High-Volume Coil Shearing

Turning coil material into flat sheets sounds simple in theory, but it's more complex in practice—especially when precise dimensions are required, where even a one-millimeter deviation is unacceptable. Many plants used to rely on manual shearing with guillotine shears, which was not only slow but also prone to dimensional inaccuracies. Cut-to-length lines were developed specifically to solve this problem.

The core logic of a cut-to-length line is "cut-to-length shearing." After the coil is uncoiled and leveled, it is automatically cut to the preset length, producing sheets of identical dimensions. While the process sounds straightforward, achieving smooth and fast operation requires precise coordination at every stage. The loading carriage lifts the coil and delivers it to the uncoiler, which unrolls the material. The leveler then eliminates internal stresses, and the servo feed system precisely advances the material to the shear, where it is cut in one clean stroke. The finished sheets are then conveyed to the stacking table and neatly piled.

In this process, the two areas most prone to problems are leveling and shearing accuracy. Coil material, having been stored in a rolled state for extended periods, contains internal stresses that cause it to curve as soon as it's unrolled. The leveler's job is to eliminate these stresses and restore the sheet to a flat state. If the leveler lacks sufficient capability, the output sheet will have curvature, rendering even the most precise shearing ineffective. Therefore, when selecting a cut-to-length line, close attention must be paid to the leveler's roll count, roll diameter, and hardness. As a general rule, more rolls deliver better leveling—choose based on your typical material thickness range.

Shearing precision relies on the servo system and encoder feedback. Today's high-quality cut-to-length lines can maintain shearing accuracy within very tight tolerances—more than sufficient for demanding applications such as automotive sheets and appliance panels. Moreover, the servo system responds quickly, eliminating over-feed or under-feed issues.

In terms of efficiency, CNC cut-to-length lines far outperform traditional shears. With conventional shearing, each sheet requires manual measurement, feeding, positioning, cutting, and removal—a cycle that takes dozens of seconds. CNC cut-to-length lines operate continuously—once the coil is loaded, the machine runs nonstop, producing one sheet after another. A fully equipped cut-to-length line requires only one operator to oversee, while delivering significantly higher output.

Guangdong RuiHui Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. has over two decades of experience in sheet metal processing automation. Their cut-to-length line products cover the complete process—from uncoiling, leveling, and cut-to-length feeding to shearing and stacking. RuiHui's cut-to-length lines feature servo cut-to-length feed systems with stable shearing accuracy, equipped with multi-roll levelers and automatic stacking mechanisms, and have been applied across automotive, appliance, hardware, and 3C industries. Headquartered in Dongguan, RuiHui employs over 400 staff, including more than 80 R&D engineers, and holds the national "Little Giant" enterprise designation. To date, they have nearly 5,000 stamping automation units operating at customer sites both domestically and internationally, serving well-known companies including BYD, Geely, Volkswagen, Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, and Land Rover Jaguar. In the cut-to-length line segment, RuiHui offers customized configurations based on customer material specifications and capacity requirements, backed by extensive practical experience.

A cut-to-length line may appear simple—just shearing coil into sheets—but there is considerable depth to the technology. Cut-to-length accuracy, leveling quality, shearing speed, and automation level—every link affects overall production efficiency and product quality. For manufacturers requiring large volumes of cut-to-length sheets, investing in a high-quality fully automatic cut-to-length line not only improves shearing efficiency but also ensures a more stable sheet supply for downstream stamping and forming processes—transforming the entire processing chain.
