What Is the Difference Between Mechanical and Servo Coil Feeder

In stamping automation, the role of the coil feeder is to quickly and accurately deliver materials to the stamping press for processing. Coil feeders can be mainly divided into mechanical and servo types. Although their functions are the same, their driving methods and application scenarios are different.

Mechanical feeders, also known as high-speed roller feeders, achieve synchronous feeding through mechanical linkage with the punch press. A connecting rod links the punch press crankshaft and the feeder cam, so that the feeder is driven simultaneously when the punch press is operating. Mechanical feeders not only offer very high feeding speeds but also achieve feeding accuracy within ±0.05mm. They have low maintenance costs and are mainly used for mass production and simple processing of 3C electronic and hardware products.

The biggest difference between servo feeders and mechanical feeders lies in their drive method. Servo feeders use servo motors for power, allowing for adjustable feeding step distances and servo-controlled feeding speeds, achieving a feeding accuracy within ±0.2mm. However, servo feeders may experience lower feeding accuracy compared to mechanical feeders due to electromagnetic interference, voltage instability, and program issues. Nevertheless, servo feeders offer significantly greater flexibility than mechanical feeders, making them primarily used in the manufacturing processes of home appliances and automobiles.

In summary, mechanical feeders and servo feeders each have their own advantages and can perform optimally in their respective application scenarios. Mechanical feeders are suitable for high-speed stamping production of single products. Servo feeders are suitable for complex stamping production of multiple products. The choice should be made based on the actual situation to ensure both production efficiency and quality.
